A massive explosion caused by 98 containers of gunpowder took place last Monday morning, 11/07/11 at the Evangelos Florakis base in Limassol, Cyprus. It was the worst peacetime military accident that resulted in the death 13 people. The dead included the head of Cyprus’ navy, Andreas Ioannides, along with the commander of the naval base, Lambros Lambrou, firemen and soldiers.
The extent of the damage cannot be ascertained and it has been described as “a biblical disaster”. The nearby power station at Vassilikou, the largest on the island was struck by the blast, knocking out local power supplies.
This resulted to extensive power-cuts that take place throughout the day and night all over the island for an undetermined period of time.
Consequently we inform our clients that in the following days, it may not be possible to contact our office by phone or fax during normal working hours due to power-cuts. Email correspondence should be preferred for communication as we eventually download the emails from our server and try to respond the soonest.
We are working to find a solution to the problem but it will take some time.
Cyprus is currently going through an unprecedented energy crisis, therefore it is very difficult to foresee when things will go back to normal.
